Company Background
For more than 80 years, Eisenmann Druckguss GmbH, based in Villingen, Germany, has specialized in manufacturing high-precision components made of zinc and aluminum. With a team of 220 dedicated employees, the company supplies premium-quality parts and innovative solutions to leading automotive manufacturers and a wide range of customers in other industries.

Production Setup
Among the core machinery is a Frech hot-chamber die-casting machine, model DAW 20T. The hydraulic system operates with 230 liters of Petrofer Ultra Safe 620 – a water-glycol mixture.

The Challenge
During the die-casting process, the hydraulic system becomes increasingly contaminated by particles resulting from operational wear and tear. This contamination causes variations in piston speed, which in turn affects the consistency and quality of the cast parts. These fluctuations can lead to product defects, increased downtime, and reduced overall efficiency.

Testing the GreenOil Filtration Solution
To address this challenge, a GreenOil filtration unit was installed and tested for its ability to clean and maintain hydraulic oil purity. Oil samples were collected both before and after the test period for laboratory analysis.

Customer Comments – Eisenmann Druckguss GmbH

“We are rather satisfied with these results. Only a reliable oil filtration at the die-casting machines can maximize a process reliability even so promises to optimize economic process”.

American Seafoods

Back in 2018 American Seafoods ordered two offline oil filtration systems one for lubrication oil and one for diesel. It was the vessel Northern Eagle which was retrofitted first. For the two main engines Bergen BRM 8, we installed two GreenOil system of the type WP1-P2-750 which ensured the engines could run smoothly as the lubrication oil was cleaned thoroughly. Once installed, American Seafoods saw first hand the benefits of quality oil filtration.

After the trial period ended, they found it to be working as promised, that a GreenOil system is in fact performance that can be relied on. Therefore, they decided to have more vessels retrofitted, ultimately removing separators completely. Sister vessels Northern Jaeger, American Dynasty, Ocean Rover and Katie Ann has also been equipped with engine lubrication oil filtration and diesel filtration, and have now been running for years with lowered downtime, saved manhours and easy maintenance.

As a retrofit case, the return on investment are in these cases were all around 4 months. American Seafoods can now rely on a simply and highly efficient filtration systems, which are also less time consuming and have better environmental prospect.

A Concept for the Crew

“I really like the units so far. It’s a simple concept that works really well. The oil samples came back with no issues. We go through less cartridges then what I expected. The units are very simple to operate, and to service. No tools, or special knowledge needed. No physical contact with the oil, and no mess involved in the process of rep/acing cartridges. The cartridges can also be disposed in the incinerator, so no issues there.

Very few spare parts will be required to have on hand, other than the consumable cartridges. I can maybe see the need to have a spare pump with motor, a couple of electric heating elements, and a few seals, but this would be a tiny fraction of the inventory needed for the Alfa Laval separators. No expensive, or complicated electronics are involved, thus no need to have expensive replacement electronics as spares.

Crew likes the concept. Very low maintenance, and simple to service.”

GreenOil Optimize the Operation of the DFDS Fleet

GreenOil Optimize the Operation of the DFDS Fleet

Onboard the DFDS Ro-Ro cargo ship Ark Germanina, 15 GreenOil offline oil filtration systems are installed, ensuring that the cargo safely arrives in either Esbjerg or Immingham harbor. The systems are distributed on six different applications onboard the Ark Germanina: thrusters, controllable pitch propeller, gearbox, steering gear, hydraulic ramps and stern tubes. The majority of these installation have been used since 2014, when the ship was put into operation. Most recently, the ship’s three auxiliary engines have been fitted with GreenOil systems based on the successful performance of the other six applications.

»We are now able to primarily use GreenOil filters for cleaning the lubrication oil from our three auxiliary engines, because of the auxiliary engines’ few operating hours. It results in great expenditure cuts, when the separator is not needed. This process both saves power to the separator and maintenance costs« – Chief engineer Per Severinsen, who shares the daily technical responsibility with his colleague chief engineer Jeppe Nissen-Jørgensen in a 14-day rotation.

The comparison of a separator and a GreenOil system, showed DFDS the benefits of the new approach to oil filtration. One of the main concerns when choosing a new technology is the investment. For Ark Germania’s investment on the three auxiliary engines a return of investment was calculated as a period of 12 months. The short ROI resulted in two areas of optimization. The great expenditure cuts concerning the old separators, as it has now been activated since the GreenOil filters were installed. Secondly, the minimal expenses concerning the replacement of the filter cartridges on the GreenOil system. Contrary to the separator, the GreenOil systems does not need to heat the oil, thereby saving energy and money. Additionally the filtration process in a GreenOil system is more smooth than when filtrating using a separator, thereby minimizing the risk of damaging the oil.

The annual operating costs for the separator is estimated at 12,000 USD, while the operating costs of three GreenOil filters are 3,900 USD. That is a significant difference of 8,100 USD.

Removal of Particles and Water

GreenOil filters are providing filtration of particles and water separation in Ark Germania’s thrusters, gearbox, steering gear, CPP, hydraulic ramps and stern tubes. It is the unique and patented solution which ensures an efficient water separation and a continuous supply of clean oil. In the auxiliary engines, the primary concern is particles causing unnecessary attrition of the components, which can affect the quality and longevity of the oil. Therefore, the primary process is particles filtration, removing particles down to 2 my from the oil. GreenOil systems extend the life time of the oil onboard due to the high-quality filtration.

»We have found the GreenOil filters on board Ark Germania very satisfactory, and it corresponds to the experience on board other ships in the DFDS fleet, where they use the GreenOil filters as well« – chief engineer Per Severinsen.

GreenOil filters accomplish this task completely satisfactory, in the daily operation on board the Ark Germania – in addition, they ensure reliability, minimal energy consumption and easy installation.

Different types of oil

There are many positive sides effects to clean oil, one of them is the effect visibly seen on components which are in direct contact with the oil such as pumps, engines and bearings. The cleaner the oil is, the less wear and tear are seen on components. In collaboration with GreenOil, The Chiefs on Ark Germania have found the right system and filter inserts for all types of oil onboard, namely lubrication oil, hydraulic oil and gear oil. In addition to prolonged lifetime for the vessels components, the advantages found onboard are low acquisition and operation costs as well as effortless maintenance with no oil contact nor physical contact with the oil.

»Each type of oil requires a special filter cartridge that GreenOil provides, and which we have in stock on board, so we always have them ready, whenever we need to change the filter cartridge«
– Per Severinsen.

Effortless maintenance

GreenOil makes oil filtration effortless. Not only is the installation simple, but changing a filter can be done in a manner of minutes. Onboard Ark Germania, the engeineers have installed the systems themselves, systems that are expected to last at least 20 years. Htey have experiences first hand the ease of replacing a used filter insert with a new one, without contact with the oil or a large cleanup job afterwards. Once the filter insert is changed, simply turn on the switch again.

»We just need to keep an eye on the pressure in the filter during our rounds. When the pressure gauge shows a certain pressure, the filter cartridge is replaced. It does not take many minutes and it happens a few times a year« – Per Severinsen.

The GreenOil filters have minimal energy consumption and a pure mechanical functionality. The intention is that service, maintenance and operation should be as effortless and quick for the crew as possible. This is confirmed by the chief engineers from Ark Germania.

»After two years of operation we are very satisfied with the GreenOil filters. There have not been any bad experiences or unpleasant surprises« -Per Severinsen.

Oil filtration made simple

Oil filtration made simple

Frustration amongst the crew had grown within the MSM fleet. Their existing onboard centrifugal separators required too many spare parts, handling had become a hassle and the order procedure left much to be desired. Most importantly they had continues problems with water contamination in their main engine’s lube oil, and therefore had to change it too often to avoid engine breakdowns. After 3 years of patience, it was time for a change, it was time for quality and simplicity, it was time for GreenOil.

In August 2020, the first GreenOil system was installed onboard MV MSM DON. The WP1-P2-750 was fitted to clean the lubeoil of a Yanmar main engine type 6EY26, shortly thereafter great results were obtained and substantial savings were achieved within a few moths.

Onboard each vessel a WP1-P2-750 system is installed, providing quality filtration on lubeoil.

Now, a few years after GreenOil was chosen to set the standard for Mastermind Shipmanagement ltd. oil filtration, the results are still positive. So much so, that MSM is awaiting the installation of a GreenOil system on a fourth vessel in their fleet in the summer of 2022 and have ordered ten WP1-B2-400 systems for their five O-class bulk carriers.

MSM saw the benefits of not only a short return of investment, the reliability of clean oil, but also the advantages surrounding maintenance especially the ease of changing a filter in a manner of minutes.

Design and Practicality

Design and practicality are a part of the GreenOil DNA, we always strive to create systems which work well both in theory and reality. An instrumental part of working well is the ease at which a system can be handled.
A vessel can swiftly find it self in high seas, where maintenance is not top of mind nor easy to perform. In such conditions reliable machinery is Alfa and Omega. Therefore, functionality for both crew and filtration was an integral part of the design process.

A design which Mastermind saw the benefits of, as it lowers downtime, prolongs the lifespan of oil and the machinery and is better for the environment i.e. CO2 reduction, no sludge, and no oil loss during filter change.

The greener footprint was one more reason to continue with the GreenOil installations from MSM management’s side. They saw a change that would benefit the fleet now and in the future, ensuring that all their vessels will have water under their keels for years to come. Based on the positive experience with a new solution in oil filtration, Mastermind is now considering adding GreenOil as their partner for the coming newbuilding program.

Navkratis, our Cypriot partner saw the benefits for both GreenOil and MSM, and facilitated the sale.
